Fun fact: “The Bullet” and “The Sleep” made the rough foundation of what later became “Second Skin”, though with some significant changes. A big part of the reason was that I really liked Pete and Josie and wanted to give them a bigger story. “So you did him in the school yard?” I asked, still a bit incredulous.
I found the chemistry between all 3 very good. The dialogue was snappy, meant as a compliment. I have known a few Gemma's and you caught that kind of woman perfectly I thought. One came right to mind and fleshed out the character instantly for me. I am not sure of the connection to the Sleep but will look forward to reading -2 for more.
Thank you so much, Bruce. There's probably no greater compliment for a writer than what you've said. Oddly enough, I can't recall any Gemmas among my acquaintances but I've observed them from afar.
The connection is not really direct but at some point after I wrote both stories my brain said "What if we combine this idea with that idea into a whole new idea!" :)
I have known some Gemma's in my youth, dated a couple and was engaged briefly to one. Interestingly we have some friends who have evolved into Gemmas in mid life crisis. They are one of the many broad types of women who exist. I will be looking for more archetypes now. :)
Good thing it was brief. :) Interesting, women turning into Gemmas in midlife. Sounds like some major illusion destruction took place. The sad thing is that Gemmas tend to raise their daughters the same way. Oh, well.
